Why perform Umrah during Ramadan?
Umrah can be performed all year round outside the Hajj period, but Ramadan holds a special place. According to a hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim, an Umrah performed during Ramadan is equal in reward to a Hajj. Fasting, praying and breaking the fast in Makkah or Madinah is an experience many pilgrims prepare for months in advance.
When is Ramadan 2027?
Ramadan 2027 (1448 AH) is expected to begin around 8 February 2027 and end around 9 March 2027, followed by Eid al-Fitr. Exact dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon and may shift by a day. The last ten nights, which include Laylat al-Qadr, are the busiest period of the year in the Two Holy Mosques.
When should you apply for your Umrah visa?
Apply once your return flight is booked, as the ticket is one of the required documents. For Ramadan we recommend:
- Booking flights and accommodation early: prices rise sharply as Ramadan approaches, especially for the last ten nights.
- Applying at least 3 to 4 weeks before departure to keep a margin in case a document needs correcting.
- Choosing express processing (€49 extra per traveller) if you leave soon: 24-48 working hours instead of 3-5 working days.
- Checking your passport: it must be valid at least 6 months after arrival.

What to expect on site
Crowds are very large, especially in the evening during Tarawih and in the last ten nights. Allow extra time between your hotel and the mosque and choose accommodation close to the Haram.
The official Nusuk app is used to book certain time slots, such as the visit to the Rawdah in Madinah. Install it before leaving and book as early as possible, as slots go fast during Ramadan.
The weather in February and March is milder than in summer, which makes fasting and the rites easier. Drink plenty at suhur and iftar.
