Dress
Modest clothing is expected in public: shoulders and knees covered for men and women. Women are not required to wear an abaya as visitors, but loose clothing is appreciated. Specific rules apply in the holy sites.
Prohibited
Alcohol and drugs are prohibited, with very severe penalties for narcotics. Public displays of affection and offensive behaviour are to be avoided.
Ramadan and prayer times
During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daytime. Some shops close briefly at prayer times.
Photography
Do not photograph people, especially women, without their consent, nor government or military buildings.
